UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONSERVATORIES

Understanding The Different Types Of Conservatories

There is no denying that conservatories are an amazing addition to any property and there are numerous benefits to installing one. If you’ve decided that this is the year you’re going to bite the bullet and go ahead with an extension project, you have probably started to research into the different options that are available to you.  Many people are surprised to find that there is in fact more than one type of conservatory. Anyone that is inexperienced in this regard is so used to putting all conservatories into the same category that it can be quite confusing when you’re presented with a few different options. To help you get your head around the different types of conservatories, the team at Brackenwood have put together an easy to understand guide.

Classic conservatories

When you think of a conservatory there is probably a very clear image that springs to mind, more often than not this image will be of what we would call a ‘classic’ conservatory. They tend to have a complete glass look to them and both the walls and the ceiling will be made up of huge windows. Stereotypically, you can also expect these conservatories to be a hexagonal shape. These tend to be the most simple solution to installing a conservatory, they are practical and straightforward, yet still bright, airy and beautiful.

Solid roof conservatories

The name of these conservatories is quite self-explanatory. Instead of having the classic glass roof, solid roof conservatories have tiled roofs, similar to the rest of your property. It isn’t uncommon for people to still have windows in their roof so that they don’t lose all of the light coming in from above, and this is a great way to get the best of both worlds. There is no denying that a solid roof can be beneficial in so many ways, from reducing your energy bills to keeping the room at a comfortable temperature all year round.

Lean-to conservatories

You may not have heard this name before, but these conservatories are incredibly modern and stylish. Lean-to conservatories tend to be rectangular, they have three sides and use the existing exterior wall of your property as the fourth wall, and they are designed to blend seamlessly into a property. This type of conservatory gets its name from the style of the roof, they have a flat angled roof (which helps prevent any issues with rainwater) and it gives the appearance that the room is ‘leaning’ against the house.

Loggia conservatories

Again, this is a name you may not have heard of. Loggia conservatories have unique features when compared to other conservatories which are inspired by the outside rooms of European villas. Like classic conservatories, the majority of these extensions are glass but, they also feature multiple wider aluminium in-fill panels and dwarf wall panels. This unique style gives this type of conservatory an edge and they are often bespoke designed. It isn’t uncommon for people to create larger loggia conservatories that are an L or T shape.

Orangeries

Whilst this isn’t technically a conservatory, it falls under the same category and for some, is a better option. Typically, an orangery is more of a separate room than other conservatories that tend to be more integrated styles. Also, it is quite common for orangeries to have a slightly different roof to classic conservatories, they will have a flat perimeter with a centralised lantern which has a beautiful unique look. They come in a range of sizes, styles and configurations and, are incredibly flexible in this regard.
